Numeracy

Math has always been difficult for me.  I was throughout high school and continued through my college days! Oh, how I hated going to math classes in college! Because of all of this, though, it really makes me strive to be a BETTER math teacher.  I really want my kids to have a strong understanding of numeracy.  I want their foundation to be firm.

This week we talked all about numbers to 5. We started each day with sharing everything we knew about the number and how to show it.  To do this, we created number anchor charts!

Sweet Cara over at The First Grade Parade did this last year and now you can buy her's for sale.  I actually have them and they are up in my classroom, but the kids haven't even noticed them yet.  I thought it was important for them to make the charts WITH me! After they are too large and in the way, I will introduce Cara's to them, which are pretty close to what we made. {Snag Cara's ready made number posters HERE. They are adorable!}

Each day we used pages from Cara's Don't Forget My Number unit to further discuss each number.  They were perfect for our objectives!!

We also were busy in math work stations this week.

We practiced counting to 30 and writing the numbers if we were ready.

We practiced ordering numbers 1-5 with puzzles.

We also practiced one-to-one correspondence as we counted to 5 and created matching sets for numbers 1-5.

You can find all of this and more in my new Kitty Cat Numeration and Ordering math work station set.

I'm off to get some sleep! I hope you have a great weekend!
